Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Try watching a video clip with crackling speakers, or creating dances to distorted music that you can barely hear, and you will know why I am posting this project. There are so many great digital learning tools out there, but if the students not able to hear them, the experience is ruined!

My students are so excited about learning that they groan when the bell rings at the end of the day.

I teach at an inner city school in Los Angeles that has a focus on Science, Math and Technology. Our school is a Title 1 school, and over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch. These children are amazing in their enthusiasm, and I hate to let them down when I can't deliver the optimal instruction they deserve. We finally got projectors, but all of our speakers are old and small, and blown out. They get so excited about the BrainPOP videos or other video clips I find, but I usually spend half the time fooling with the cord that has a short in it, and the other half playing with the volume. These students are a joy to teach, and they have never once complained. They are so used to making do, you cannot imagine how impressed and grateful they would be if they had something nice like this speaker.

My Project

This speaker will be used frequently throughout the day. One way it is used is to play videos and learning animation clips that are helpful in illustrating concepts, but it will also be used for simple things like playing classical music while they write. For math there are many interactive games that we play as a class, and it would be great to hear the sound signals and clues. The students also like to choreograph song and dance routines to music about what they are learning. Sound in a class can have the power to affect ambiance and mood. The fact that it is wireless means that I can easily adjust our learning soundtrack to be relaxing or fast paced depending on our activities.

It is often the simple things that can make a huge different.

Day in and day out struggling to get things to work means less time learning. In this day and age we cannot afford to waste a minute. This speaker will enliven our classroom, and ramp up the instruction, by giving us full access to the digital learning tools available.
