Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a Title I charter school that serves K-12 students from diverse backgrounds in south east San Diego. Our current population is approximately 60% Hispanic/Latino, 20% African American/Black, 18% Asian, and 2% White/Caucasian. Our school believes in fostering high academic standards, ensuring emotional and social growth, and maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all of our students. We bring higher education to the forefront of expectations for the future of our students, anticipating 100% college attendance after high school graduation. This is important to us because many of our children do not come from families with college experience.
I am a kindergarten teacher at our school.
I have 21 students in my class this year who represent various backgrounds, strengths and abilities. We are learning how to be productive students, curious learners and good citizens. Many of my students have no prior educational experience in preschools or academic daycare centers, so I am excited to see how much they grow as we learn to read, write and discover new things together!
My Project
In kindergarten, we love to learn with our hands! I want to elevate our literacy curriculum and lessons with fun and inspiring art activities, and need help gaining the supplies to do so. I am asking for a class set of paints, letter stamps, brushes, bowls, a drying rack, and organizational tools to give my students a creative outlet for their learning.
Art helps children with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
Creativity is a powerful learning tool! Art can also boost higher level creative thinking. I want my students to leave my classroom with all of these skills, and what better way to get there than by lessons that engage even the hardest to reach students?
With these supplies we will be creating self-portraits, shape vehicles, make monsters come alive with texture, and experiment with color mixing, but that's only the beginning! Please help me bring the joy of creativity into our classroom so we can learn in full color!
