Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of our fabulous students (98%) come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these children have responsibilities at home that make it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school (making dinner, caring for younger siblings because parents are at work, etc.) They take what they have, however, and make the most of it. They may not be able to provide pencils or paper, but they are never without a smile.
Despite all of the challenges that they face, their hearts remain full of hope and love.
My Project
I would love to have my students enjoy learning reading and math activities in color.
A young child’s eyesight is attracted to all different colors and shapes.
It would be very efficient to have the materials that we use on a daily basis printed in color. To have flash cards with written words along with the designated drawing that are no longer just black and white, but for them to really catch the students attention. More than anything I would like to print small books that students can enjoy reading on their own with. With these books they will develop their comprehension skills, fluency, and vocabulary. Getting the materials and supplies that we need is sometimes challenging. My students are excited to learn and explore new horizons every day. As first graders, reading is an adventure they just discovered not too long ago. Bilingual teachers struggle in finding fun and exciting books that will catch our students attention in their native language. My sole mission is to get my students back on track. To get them even more anxious in reading books and flourishing their comprehension and fluency skills. To see their young minds, imagination, and creativity reach its full potential is what motivates me to become a better teacher for them.
