Charity Middle School is located in rural southeastern North Carolina. We are primarly an agricultural county. Our school has a large population of English as a Second Language (ESL) students who struggle with learing in English while still speaking Spanish at home. Many of our students arrive to enroll and have to be placed in a grade based on their age. Often when they arrive at our school they have had little to no formal education in their home country. Since they are so far behind their peers and struggle daily with the language they become discouraged, stop coming to school and eventually drop out. It is difficult for young teenagers to stay in school when they don't understand what is going on in class. We have one ESL teacher who tries valiantly to help our students but he can't give them the time they need and want in the course of a day. As a counselor I would like to help, but my Spanish is poor. I will be taking a spanish class this spring, but I will still have my duties and responsibilites to the school to meet. I am asking for you to aid us in helping our students learn the vocabulary through the Multimedia English Vocabulary Program. This program will allow the students to work at their own pace and see and hear in Spanish and English common everyday words. The students have expressed their desire to hear the words and see them in order to feel comfortable with speaking English. I plan to start reading books on tape for them, so they may read and hear books from our library. When this grant is funded I will try to write a grant for other professionally read books and tapes. Our students want to succeed and do well, I want to do whatever I can to help them meet that goal. I hope you can help us as well. Thank you.
