Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my second grade students know very little about where their immediate ancestors come from or anything about their family history. During History/Social Science lessons, I will teach my students how to research and document information about their family.
My classroom is a melting pot of cultures with students from Bulgaria, Laos, Ethiopia, Spain, Ecuador and more.
Whenever there is an upcoming holiday or cultural occasion, my students have intense discussions about how they celebrate these events in very different ways. There is tremendous interest to hear more about each students' culture and family traditions. However, my students have limited information about their heritage.
My Project
My students will use the requested iPad Air 2 to interview an ancestor who came from their family's country of origin to live in America. They will use the tablet to record information, take pictures of family artifacts, import maps, and create a timeline. They will make a digital, hand-drawn portrait of their ancestor and family home using the iPad Art Room. This is a 21st Century tool for learning visual art. So even the most "all thumbs" artist will be successful. Students will use the Cam Scanner application on the iPad to import photos to use as a template for their art work. By "Empowering Students Through Art" and technology, my students will use their primary source information stored on the iPad to create a multimedia presentation about an ancestor. They will also design a physical poster that will be permanently displayed in the classroom for the remaining of the year to foster cultural pride.
My students are very interested in learning about the different cultures of their classmates.
Donations to my project, "Learning Humanities Through Art and Technology" will help my students learn, document, and share information about their ancestors and heritage. In the process, they will also learn to fuse art and technology to develop stronger communication skills, critical thinking skills, and broaden their cultural perspective.
