This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students consist of 24 elementary school children during the school day and various fourth and fifth-grade students in my after-school programs. They always come to school with smiles on their faces and continue to make me laugh. They come from various backgrounds and some have limited opportunities due to financial means.
My students love to be at school, love to learn, have fun, and appreciate verbal praise as well as working toward earning rewards in the classroom.
In addition, they love to do one thing the most, free write.
My Project
Learning about history through the use of textbooks is one way to learn about the events from the past. However, I feel that introducing history through narrative stories helps students learn about the past in a different way. It allows students to see what the people of that particular time period were going through and the challenges they faced. In addition, it allows for the students to study character traits and various story elements. In this cart I have included age appropriate historical fiction books to help students learn about various historic events that are told from a different perspective than their traditional textbooks.
