Help me give my students great literary experiences despite budget cuts! All students deserve to hold a physical book in their hands. I want to give students the experience of Animal Farm and Warriors Don't Cry.
My students are a diverse bunch of learners, eager for new challenges and academic opportunities. Our school teaches language arts and history as combined classes, and the students love the opportunity to read fiction and nonfiction texts that apply to the world around them. They love to debate current issues and discuss ideas in Socratic Seminars, both of which lead to informed and passionate writing.
Whenever possible, I love to combine creative, critical thinking opportunities with historical lessons: original children's books about Holocaust Heroes, artistic timelines with biography reading, poetry reflections about difficult moments in history.
The creative process allows students room to process the more difficult parts of American history in a very personal way. I find it immensely satisfying to give students that chance.
My Project
We teach history and language arts as one combined class period, which means we get to explore history through a unique perspective. It is a richer learning experience that takes students beyond the textbook. However, budget cuts leave us only able to buy classroom sets of books.
These extra books will allow students to take their books home for nightly reading instead of only having access to them at school.
This will allow students to interact and study the text on a deeper level that isn't dictated by the school bell.
