Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to school ready to learn. Our days fly by like eagles in the wind. Our class is a place where the students are learning to love literature. As their teacher I want to expose them to many different types of literature from fantasy to non-fiction.
My students are hard working and caring people.
Each come to school learning content and English, which can be an overwhelming task. When they go home they often balance school work with babysitting sibling(s) so parents can work multiple jobs. Most of my students are on free and reduced lunch. They often struggle in basic skills. Using sets of quality literature to incorporate into my reading and social studies lessons will make students more connected and interested in these subjects.
My Project
My students will use the novel The Sign Of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare, to connect their new knowledge of early America to the story of a boy who lived through this time with his family. We will have classroom discussions where students will be able to learn to improve their critical thinking skills. They will compare the knowledge they have acquired in social studies to the information in the novel. This will allow them to practice the common core standards of craft and structure.
These novels will allow my student to have a class set of The Sign of The Beaver in which we will use as a read aloud text.
All students will be able to be involved in the reading and learning of this text no matter what their reading level may be. By hearing quality literature all students will be able to become a valuable member of the classroom discussions.
