Reading for enjoyment and understanding, that is what I hope for my students by the end of the year.
My Students are apart if the NYSAA program known as ACES.
These amazing students are a low function population amongst the larger special education population. Many of my students, though in High School cannot read beyond a 1st grade level. As a Social Studies and Reading teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. It is a challenge to keep them interested in a topic for long periods of time, so many of our topics are extended over many weeks. They are apart of a work study program as well. They gain both life skills and academics in one place. This helps them to gain a better sense of life after they leave our program. They have the opportunity to stay in this program until they are 21, meaning many of my students will be with me for 8 years. This also causes a challenge because granted many of them do not retain info for that long, I must recreate the curriculum each year.
My Project
The sets of biography books that I have requested will help my students learn about different famous people that have helped to share our country and our lives. These books are at a reading level that many of them will be able to independently read and understand. While some will need minor support from myself and my amazing Paraprofessionals. They will then use the information that have obtain from these books to write a Biography about the person they have read. They will then present their project to the class, in hopes of teaching their classmates about the famous person they studied.
Donations t this project will help my students expand their knowledge of history and improve their reading ability.
In addition it will empower their love for reading. I hope by being introduced to reading on a level they can understand, will help them understand the curriculum and want them to learn more about history.
