My students are amazing readers, makers, inventors, and thinkers who love to learn as much as possible! These students live in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where they love to spend their days with their toes in the sand and books in their hands. As their librarian, I see all students grades K-5 every single week, and I love to see how they develop as learners throughout elementary school.
These enthusiastic individuals embrace literacy by having fun with books and by sharing them with their friends, and they always bring their best, creative ideas to the library.
Their love of reading, making, and learning stands out and lets me know that the library should be a haven for all of these activities for them!
My Project
This year I have tried to bring the #InnovatorsMindset into the library in a big way! I want students to think of the library as a place where they can go to experience exciting hands-on learning. One way that I have been incorporating this into the curriculum is to support Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) lessons with exciting stations in the media center. During their library time, students have the choice of going to different activities where they can participate in collaborative learning experiences.
The next step is to provide new STEAM stations, so students can experience continuous growth.
I would like to enable students to create with a variety of craft materials to support their innovation. These materials would support art projects in our crafting how-to books. I would also like to include science experiments at a station, such as a crystal growing activity, a solar rover kit, and a tin can robot. These materials would expand the activities I can offer and continue to keep students interested in STEAM subjects.
Please consider supporting my students and helping our STEAM stations grow!
