My Project
Children are naturally curious about the world. Learning from the experiences of other people can affect how children react to situations they encounter on their journey through life.
My project is designed to allow students to learn about the experiences and challenges faced by many famous people who have had a hand in shaping the United States through well-written and engaging biographies that are age-appropriate for fifth and sixth graders.
Along with biographies, my project includes non-fiction books about historical events and a collection of the I Survived books which are fictionalized accounts of different historical events.
Through stories, students can learn about American history while experiencing what the fictional characters endure in fictionalized versions of actual historical events. Students connect with book characters differently than they do through non-fiction. The project will allow students to do both.
My students are from diverse backgrounds and cultures. We have students from every ethnic background and income level. Many of our students are avid readers, but our biography section of the school library is out-of-date and is missing several important historical figures. Our school library funding is limited and students have to wait for long periods to get the opportunity to read the Who Is? biographies and the I Survived books. This project would cut down the wait time and encourage more reading.
