We started the book a couple weeks ago, and I have really enjoyed working through the plot with the students. \r\n\r\nOne really cool thing that has helped with our fiction unit is that I am able to pause and have the kids identify figurative language used throughout the book. Figurative language is big for 6th grade, and I think them identifying the language in real life has helped quite a bit. When I say figurative language, I am referring to similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperboles. I can give them the definition of those literary devices all day, but they don't truly grasp the meanings until they see how authors use them to make writing more interesting. \r\n\r\nOur next unit of study is nonfiction. I will use the Scope magazines after the holidays as we tackle all kinds of nonfiction.","fullyFundedDate":1758472403097,"projectUrl":"project/helpmy-class-size-grew-we-want-to-re/9574431/","projectTitle":"Help...My Class Size Grew! The first thing I had them do was to complete a scavenger hunt inside the September issue. It was a great review of text features like captions, side bars, bolded print, italics, insets, etc. The kids did great, and I saw some of them get a little distracted by reading the articles. I love seeing 11 year olds get distracted by READING! \r\n\r\nEach issue offers a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and dramas.
