Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children's books aren't just for babies. Children's literature is poetry, written in a language all kids can understand; yet these models of exceptional writing are often absent from middle school English classrooms.

My students are 6th graders ranging from ages ten through twelve.

They attend an urban, public school in California. They are racially diverse and most come from low income families. Student capabilities in language arts are also varied with state test scores ranging from far below basic to advanced.

My Project

I am requesting rich children's literature- specific, hand-selected books which effectively demonstrate one or more writing traits. These texts will serve as models of "good writing" because they are simply but "masterfully" written. I am also requesting dry erase crayons to use with mini white board activities that engage students in activities as they analyze texts.

Exemplary models are the key to exemplary writing.

Students need to read excellent writing to write well, and children's literature presents the ideal model- poetic and simplistic at the same time.
