Learning for All: Assistive Technology in 1st Grade

My Project

All first graders can get fidgety and restless. Most are working on fine motor skills, such as tying shoelaces and buttoning clothes. Students often hyperfixate on their shoes not being tied, or struggle to use the bathroom when they can't yet work buttons or belts, all of which prevents them from learning.

For students with disabilities and/or substantial trauma backgrounds, meeting these physical and life skill needs are even more critical.

They will not be able to learn if these basic needs are not being met. Assistive technology like small pencils, large glue sticks, pencil grips, and loop scissors will benefit all students who are still strengthening their hand muscles, but especially those with physical or occupational disabilities. Color coding with highlighters can help students better visually engage with learning material. The paper storage bins are to keep everything organized and accessible.

During daily morning meeting, students will utilize the fine motor dolls, boards, and bean bags to practice necessary life skills like shoe tying and buttoning clothes in a fun and engaging way. For students with ADHD or increased anxiety, the use of sensory strips and wobble feet will give a greater opportunity for movement without being disruptive to the class.
