I work in an area of extremely high poverty with free lunch and breakfast for all of the students in my school.
I have a large group of kindergartners who are ready to blossom as readers, writers, and mathematicians.
School is a fun and safe place for my students, and it is my job to make sure they want to come to my class and that they have what they need to be successful. I need to make sure my students are safe.
My students never fail to amaze me. They rise to any and all challenges they are faced with and teach me new things each and every day.
My Project
Imagine being 5 years old and not understanding the value of money or the concept of earning it for things that you need. I want to give my Kindergarteners an opportunity to learn through play. Since they are unable to share materials this year this means that I need extra materials. In order to use their imagination to learn they will need things to create grocery stores, restaurants, ice cream parlors, etc. My students will be creating menus with prices, making change for “customers” and ordering supplies that they need. The cash registers and play money will help my students begin learning about money and being responsible with it. As part of their choice stations each will be creating a job in our classroom “neighborhood” and learning about their responsibilities for this job. Each week my students will switch to a new job.
This year in order for my students to play near each other I will need a sneeze guard between them to ensure safety.
Although they are not able to share materials my young students need to be able to play and interact with each other any way that they can.
Please help my students get the materials that they need to be able to learn through play. Financial literacy is so important to begin learning at a young age and these materials will help get them started with handling money, sorting objects, creating menus with prices and so much more.
