Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty area. They have many obstacles to overcome before they even get to school. Many are ESL newcomers who are adjusting to a new environment. Some are home alone while their parents are working. They may be living with grandparents or in foster care because of situations they have no control over. Several are ADD, ADHD, or Autistic.
Incredibly, they mostly come with a heart full of love and a desire to learn.
My partner teacher and I have a variety of ability levels in our classroom.
My Project
About one-fourth of my students are immigrants who are entering a U.S. school for the first time. More than 80 languages are spoken in our diverse district.
As a reading teacher, I have learned the value of TOON graphic novels.
Giving students the added benefit of visual support in whatever text they are reading, provides them the opportunity to feel successful as readers. A lot of ESL students are forced to read books that are written for younger students. Graphic novels give them a chance to read something they are interested in with the added bonus of visual support.
