My Project
My students are high school English learners from around the world, each bringing unique experiences and perspectives to the classroom. It can be challenging to find books that are relatable, age-appropriate, and easy for them to understand. This project aims to provide my students with a class set of "How I Learned English: The Story of a Brave Mexican Girl," a book that tells the inspiring story of a young woman immigrating to the United States. The book is written in simple English for accessibility, has vivid illustrations, and includes discussion questions to deepen understanding.
My goal for this project is to inspire my students, build their English language proficiency, and empower them to share their own stories with confidence.
This class set will make a difference in their learning by allowing each of them to engage with the text and its visuals individually to help build comprehension and make connections. The book has relatable themes like adapting to a new culture, learning a new language, immigration, financial struggles, family separation, and cultural values. These themes reflect my students’ lived experiences, helping them feel seen and supported in their educational journey.
What makes my students special is their resilience and determination. They are newcomers navigating the challenges of high school in a new country while learning a new language. This book will support their academic growth and encourage them to see the value in their own unique journeys.
