My Students

Do you remember learning how to use a dictionary? Do you remember visiting a foreign country for the first time and carefully choosing your words from a dictionary? Dictionaries are often the lifeline for many of our students as they adjust to the United States and learn academic and social English.

Our students are all recent immigrants to the United States.

They come from many different countries and have a variety of levels of English proficiency when they arrive. We have had an increased number of students whose first language is Arabic. The students who speak Arabic may or may not be literate in their own language. Much of our initial instruction with these students takes place through pictures. As students begin acquiring English they learn how to use dictionaries to translate and build their vocabulary.

My Project

Acquiring Arabic dictionaries will provide our students with access to English on a variety of levels and will increase their participation and comprehension. Many of our students need pictures in order to access words which is the reason for the picture dictionaries. Students learn to use dictionaries as a tool for academic as well as social English acquisition. These dictionaries will be used by current students as well as future students. The dictionaries are especially important for students to have when taking high-stakes tests.

Learning a new language is an exciting and scary adventure.

It is important that we provide our students with the opportunity to be successful in their quest to become orally and linguistically proficient in English.
