This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My hard-working, determined young learners are struggling to learn a new language- ENGLISH. English is a difficult language to learn if it is not your first language. If you have ever tried learning a new language before, you know how difficult it can be...especially when everyone around you only speaks that one language. It can be challenging to communicate! These young, bright, and motivated third graders are looking forward to a fun-filled year of learning all subjects while also learning English.
This year, I aim to help students learn English by having fun through games!
They will build their vocabulary and reading skills through synonyms and sight word games. They will develop math skills by practicing saying and computing numbers in English in fun centers. Most importantly, they will play these educational games while learning the language with other friends.
Students will use the Post-it Easel Pad to write down some words they have learned from playing the game that day and draw a picture to show their understanding. We will keep all their chart paper in the corner of the classroom and review all that they have learned throughout the year at the end of the school year. I want them to see all they have learned and how much they have progressed throughout the year.
This all helps build their oral English proficiency while also building their confidence to use their English skills not just in the classroom, but at home, at the store, at a birthday party- you name it! I hope you are willing to help these fantastic students build their oral and written English proficiency skills (and organization skills) so that they will be prepared for what their bright future may bring to this country.
