This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students who come to my class are newcomers to the United States often having arrived less than month before starting school. My students come from many different countries around the world, speaking many different languages. Can you imagine starting school in a new country where the culture and language are completely different from your own? You don't understand the teacher or other students in your class. What is recess and will anyone play with you? Do you have to eat lunch alone?
My classroom provides a safe environment from the stress of a whole school day interacting in a new language that is still incomprehensible.
One way I can provide a low stress environment is to allow students to practice new English vocabulary and language structures while playing games. Games allow students to interact in fun and engaging way. They are so focused on playing the game, they forget that they are speaking a new language.
Please help me purchase board games that will allow them to learn and practice both social and academic English while enjoying working collaboratively with other students!
