My Project
My students are recent immigrants to the United States, and most of them are encountering English for the first time. What I love about them is their enthusiasm. After they get over their initial shell shock, they are eager to learn English and will do whatever they can to make it happen.
Studies have shown that one of the most effective ways for people to pick up English vocabulary and grammar patterns is to read extensively in English.
Having a classroom library with a wide array of choices is key to motivating students to do this. However, many of my students are reluctant readers even in their native languages, and this makes reading in English doubly intimidating for them. For this reason, they tend to be drawn to graphic novels because the pictures help them to understand the vocabulary and the basic story line. Oftentimes, they begin the year by reading graphic novels and then slowly graduate to more difficult texts.
I currently don't have enough of a selection of graphic novels in my classroom library to accommodate the students who are reluctant readers. With the requested books, my classroom library would offer a wide variety of high interest novels to my students. If my students can consistently find books that engage them, they will be motivated to do the extensive reading that they need to do in order to become fluent in English. Thank you!
