Learning Electric Circuits: Hand Crank Generators, Motors, Fans, and Bulbs

My Project
I look forward to teaching my Physical Science, Honors Physics, and AP Physics classes about electric circuits by starting them off with a simple hand-crank generator. Many of my students get to me with little or no understanding of how electricity works. These hand crank generators show them firsthand basically how the world gets its electrical energy no matter whether it's by wind, coal, or nuclear power plants. They all boil down to turning wires inside magnetic fields.
By providing hand crank generators to my small lab groups I will be able to teach my students about energy transformations and how electric circuits work.
They will get hands-on activities where they will use the generators to light up small light bulbs, make motors run, and connect the motors to spin gears or fan blades. By using wires and bulbs they will learn about series and parallel configurations of circuits. The toner cartridges in this project ensure that we have plenty to get us through next school year.
