My Students
My students are special in many ways. As their speech teacher, I work on improving a wide range of communication skills. My students with Autism often have difficulty expressing themselves socially. Some of my students struggle academically. Some of my students do not speak at all. I strive to find interesting and creative ways to motivate my students to express themselves and communicate effectively with those around them.
The students I work with have speech and language delays related to Autism, intellectual disabilities, and learning disabilities.
Whether these students are in specialized classrooms or are part of the general education setting, I work to address their needs in fun and engaging speech sessions. A majority of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Despite the obstacles stacked against them, these students come to school ready and eager to learn. They rely on me to meet their speech goals and improve their communication skills.
My Project
My students would benefit from learning about diversity and positive social interactions with people from different cultures. My school is host to students from various backgrounds and cultures. I have many students whose parents or who themselves were born outside of the United States. I have students whose families have come to the US from all around the world, including countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Russia, Armenia, and Vietnam.
With the right cultural materials, I know my students would appreciate seeing and feeling that they are being appropriately represented.
Materials such as LEGO World People Set would represent people and cultures in respectful ways, and broaden my students' knowledge of the world. I would be able to guide small group discussions on how people from around the world are both similar and different to us here in the US. The LEGO Build Me Emotions Set would allow me to model positive and respectful social interactions with people from different backgrounds. I plan to use these materials in both a play-based setting as well as in structured lesson plans focusing on individual cultures.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
