Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year my class is composed of twelve 3rd graders and twelve 4th graders. The fourth graders spiraled back to me from last year's 3rd grade class. As a whole, they are responsible, respectful and eager to learn.

One hundred percent of the class are English Language Learners and come from low-income families.

Two of them are newcomers from countries in South America, both which started last year with zero English and improved by two grade levels in reading. Nothing can stop this class's enthusiasm to improve. They love to try on new projects and hands-on experiences. Every single student in my class enjoys their independent ability to complete assignments on their own, and look forward to student-led group work and choice.

My Project

Students will be learning in the areas of reading, writing, science and social studies using visual arts. They will be engaged in creating abstract representations of our literature, illustrating and labeling animals for their scientific reports, and building 3-D models of historical people and places using wax sticks. The arts can bring history alive by recreating images. Students will be motivated to create their own detailed scientific journals using different artistic medium. The materials will support the students to visualize their learning and integrate the content into one big learning experience. It is much more likely for students to remember their learning when they are creating art using their new knowledge.
