Do you remember your first trip to the zoo? Do you remember having a classroom pet? My goal is to create a learning environment in my high school science classroom that enables my students to experience LIVING organisms!
The students of my rural high school science classes are extremely bright and full of potential.
They continually show a willingness to learn, but are often frustrated by a lack of sufficient resources. Most of the students come from middle class families, and several are from poverty-stricken situations, creating a diverse socio-economic group. This diversity is challenging at times to bring together on common ground.
My Project
Through the Amphibian Starter Habitat with 2 Newts, Lift-and-Clean Habitat, and TERRARIA CLASS KIT, students will be able to explore living organisms and watch them in action. Students will augment their textbook learning through hands-on exploration and engagement. For example, the newts in these habitats have the ability to regenerate limbs, eyes, spinal cords, hearts, intestines, and upper and lower jaws. The cells at the site of the injury have the ability to de-differentiate, reproduce rapidly, and differentiate again to create a new limb or organ. Seeing these processes actually occur will strengthen their knowledge of content discussed in lectures.
Donations to this worthy project will allow students that do not have the economic resources to have experiences with living organisms in the classroom.
Small, easy-to-care-for amphibians are a enrichment to the classroom that allows students to have real-world experiences to cement learning.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
