This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Located in the bustling Upper Market area of San Francisco, our school has a robust program for students with exceptional needs. The majority of our students qualify as low income and receive free or reduced lunch. Most of our student are learning English as a second language. About our classroom: We are a diverse group of students age 14-18. All of my students have disabilities and come from diverse backgrounds. I have students who speak Cantonese, Arabic, English and Spanish in their homes.

My students all have speech impairments, and most have multiple disabilities, which means they require lessons and activities are engaging and tailored to their specific learning needs.

My Project

Our classroom currently is without a working interactive whiteboard. I have seen how powerful these tools are in classes for students with disabilities, especially students with sensory disorders and multiple impairments. Common lesson formats often used in high school for their typically developing peers aren't as effective for teaching my students.

Being able to make lessons more lively by playing a video or displaying interactive multimedia books, allows my students to access curriculum that is difficult to do in a traditional lecture style lesson.

Because my students often do not have the ability to independently use technology, this tool will provide a model on how to use technology in a structured setting. I would be able to wirelessly project the screen from the alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) app on my student's tablet computer onto the whiteboard and model how to find vocabulary in their devices, like names of familiar people, or places in their community. They could work on their speech goals, like putting together 2-3 word sentences, or learn to use pronouns appropriately. My whole class could benefit from this, since they are all working on speech goals using AAC.
