My Students
I teach in a title 1 school in West Harlem. I have a group of 30 lively, curious, inquisitive third graders. My students are enthusiastic about learning and filled with questions. It is a very diverse group, my students come from many different backgrounds and cultures.
As a first year teacher, I am working with a lot of “hand me down” furniture and books.
My room is crowded with mismatching desks but filled to the brim with learning and excitement.

My goal is to create a classroom with learning centers, a classroom where all the materials are accessible to all students and learners can take ownership over their work.
A learning center is a self-contained section of the classroom in which students engage in independent and self-directed learning activities. It is a space set aside in the classroom that allows easy access to a variety of learning materials in an interesting and productive manner.
For this project I am asking for low shelves, benches and clipboards so that I can separate my room into centers. The clipboards will allow my students to work around the room. With the growing academic demands on our students, it is important to keep scholars engaged in a classroom environment that is versatile and comfortable.
