My students need the opportunity to listen to stories on tape/CD to increase their listening skills and add to the enjoyment of literature.

My Students
Hearing a story read well is KEY to loving books. Books on tape/CD allow the reader to experience different character voices and mood music which enhance the storyline. When a reader can identify with a character or book, they learn to love reading. My goal is to create a life long love of books.
My students are a wonderful group of boys and girls who really love learning.
Our school is a small neighborhood school. We are neither rich nor poor. We have a very active PTA but they cannot generate the kind of monetary support the more affluent schools can. On the other hand, we are not Title 1 or under performing so we don't get any extra monetary support that way. My students are almost one half English Language Learners and I have a handful on free and reduced lunch. Despite the setbacks that many of these boys and girls have, they show up everyday, prepared to learn. They are eager and would appreciate any opportunities they are given to enhance their educational experience.
My Project
With a listening center I will be able to give the students a positive learning experience at their own educational level. For the higher students, I can have them listen to more challenging stories and give them independent activities to work on while I work with a small group of students on another activity. For the lower students, they would have the opportunity to listen to stories at their level as well as having the opportunity to listen to the core curriculum in repeated readings. This will aide in comprehension and fluency. A listening center would be very beneficial to my second language learners in that they can hear and enjoy stories in a non-threatening environment. A listening center will allow me to have eight students working independently at one time. This will free me up to help other students or small groups of students with areas that they need more individualized attention. Finally, a listening center will support a positive learning environment.
The listening center will be beneficial to all students in my class.
It will get them excited about stories and books. It will spark their creative interests and it will get them to want to learn because with the listening center, learning will be fun.
