My Students
As an older sibling to two brothers with autism, I have an intimate understanding of the challenges denying students with disabilities the education they deserve. Now, as a special education teacher, I am constantly seeking support in finding resources to support my students' needs.
This year, our school is changing our teaching model so that we can include more students with disabilities who have been historically separated from their peers.
This means that for the first time we will have two teachers in every classroom. As a result, our school will have a lot more opportunities to teach students exactly what they need in small-groups. This project is designed to support all our students by providing our classroom with supplies to be used in centers for teaching in stations.
My Project
I'm confident that these learning materials will significantly affect my students' learning in literacy and mathematics. One of the most important things that a special education teacher can do is provide a productive learning environment that accommodates everyone's needs. Having access to these learning materials will support my students by creating a more inclusive learning environment.
Not only will struggling students get the opportunity to use hands-on learning tools to solve math problems, but also they will have the opportunity to learn from one another through these engaging games and activities.
The materials requested in this project include math manipulatives that will help students learn the most difficult fraction concepts in grades 4 and 5. It also includes a set of math games so that when students play together they can be engaged while teaching each other new concepts. In particular, I have requested different sets of math games and activity cards that focus on all the standards required in grade 4 and grade 5 mathematics. Students will use these activity cards and game materials during math centers and workshop. In addition, this project includes a class set of dry erase number lines, fraction tiles, two-color counters, and Cuisenaire rods. These are hands-on tools that students can manipulate to illustrate different math concepts related to fractions and decimals. These will be used so that students have a concrete representation of the abstract concepts being taught during the lesson.
With your support, my students will have access to new ideas so that they can make the world a better place!
