Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and their families come from homes with low literacy levels. Parents in this community struggle to help their children at home because of language barriers, too. Parent volunteers are too shy to enter classrooms because of their lack of reading and language skills so they are often found in the parent room cutting or stapling. I would love to see our students and parents more involved in the learning process and engage in academic learning centers. Our school community would also benefit from having parents monitor the learning centers as they too benefit from learning the language and acquire literacy in English.
Fun, independent academic learning centers are just as important as small group instruction to help decrease the achievement gap!
Last year, we noted the learning strides our students took after using our teacher created learning centers. They enjoyed rotating through the learning centers often saying, "THIS IS THE BEST PART OF THE DAY!" They loved the resources so much they've become overly used and a bit tattered. This year we would love to offer a wider assortment of new resources.
My Project
One of the learning centers in my classroom requires headphones. Headphones will be used in the Chromebook learning center where the students participate in classroom online assignments, learning games, and assessments. We currently do not have headphones to use on the Chromebooks so the kid-friendly headphones will inspire my students to concentrate on all of these time-on-task activities. In the reading fluency center, leveled reading fluency passages will also help improve fluency with fun topics that this learning center provides. Students will gradually challenge themselves to climb the fluency success ladder.
Kid-friendly learning center must-haves will surely motivate students to track their progress, concentrate, and stay on task.
Having grade-level appropriate learning centers helps teachers provide intervention and accelerated lessons to small groups while the others are busy participating in fun learning centers. They also help teachers concentrate planning time on the small group that is teacher-led by having the resources available to keep the other students on task.
