Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine what your life would be like if you have a cognitive disability. For my students, this is their reality. They are young adults with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, ranging from Autism to Intellectual Disability. Their disabilities have an impact on their ability to learn and to acquire the skills needed for competitive employment.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015, only 17% of people with a disability were employed vs.
65% for people without a disability. One reason for this discrepancy might be that many people with disabilities lack the skills to gain employment. These skills should have been taught in school.
Knowing this information, the programs at my school are designed to support the development of employment/vocational skills in conjunction with teaching the students the necessary independent and social skills so that they are able to obtain employment. My class, in particular, focuses on providing students with hands on, real world skills in the retail/customer service sector. Our classroom is set up like a retail store. And in my class, students learn money management, customer service skills, problem-solving skills, good work habits, communication skills, and much more.
My Project
Having a document camera will make a difference in my students' learning because the majority of my students are visual learners. It is difficult for them be engaged and to follow along if they are unable to see what is being presented. Thus, a document camera will make it easier for them to follow along during I am presenting the information to them.
My students learn best by watching.
A document camera will improve their learning by enhancing what they see and how it is presented to them. A document camera is also helpful for my students who struggle with small prints.
