This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dramatic play permits children to fit the reality of the world into their own interests and knowledge. One of the purest forms of symbolic thought available to young children, dramatic play contributes strongly to the intellectual development of children (Piaget, 1962)
My school is a title I school that serves students that come from low-income families and the majority qualify for free and reduced lunch program.
My class is the sole special education program at our school dedicated to students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities on the alternate curriculum. My students are eager learners that are in need of accessing contents in a variety of approaches and tools. They are always excited when introduced to new materials. My students are extremely active and their attention span lasts no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. They need constant stimulation. Most of my students are developing their physical and motor skills which are supported by occupational therapy and adaptive physical education. I have low-verbal and non-verbal students in the classroom that receive speech and language services. My students have many needs from basic daily life-skills (e.g. diapering) to exposure to age appropriate standards based curriculum.
My Project
My students will use the career dramatic play costumes in a center station. The station will consist of 4-6 students per rotation. The students will have the freedom to explore different roles using their creativity and life experiences. Students will be developing their problem solving skills as they role play and situations arise. They will also be constantly communicating and collaborating with peers during their exploration with dramatic play costumes. Students will be guided and encouraged to develop their stories and communicate their experiences with peers. My students will learn to experiment with roles, learn how to empathize with others and build new knowledge.
My project will make a difference because it will give my students the opportunity to use real world career costumes to reenact their life experiences.
Students' intellectual development will be benefited in a variety of ways. They will have opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills and communication skills. Donations to this project will change my students lives because they will learn in a fun, engaging, carefree and creative environment.
