Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This past year, my school has seen an influx of international and English Language Learners (ELL's/ ENL's), so the school population is now 50% ENL. Learning a new language while navigating a new country is not easy, yet the academic expectations do not change. This includes not being allowed to graduate until they can pass the English regent in English, which puts a number of students at risk of aging out of high school. In addition, economically my students are at or below the poverty line, as my school is 98% free lunch.

Considering these variables, supporting students academically and socially-emotionally is vital as they navigate their way through their new environment and language.

To this end, scaffolding and differentiating work so students can access rigorous texts and develop skills necessary for the 21st century is integral, and so multiple entry ways must be incorporated in each lesson.

My Project

My school uses the workshop model, so I will be able to project the entire part of "I do/ we do/ you do" part of the lesson using the wireless projector and pass the computer around during the "We do" and "You do" sections.

Language acquisition will be enhanced as students discuss and demonstrate their understanding of the work using the computer and projector, and through this process, build community.

This work will encourage students to speak about what they see and are doing to those in their groups, and enhance both their learning, and language skills. Using the computer will strengthen their technology skills.
