My Students
Space: The Final Frontier - To go where no Gettys' 6th grader has every gone before. This will be the motto for my 6th grade exploratory class this year. This new science based exploratory class will introduce my rural community 6th grade students to the amazing world of flight and space. Medical Detectives: Investigators - Cracking the Case will continue to be my 7th & 8th grade exploratories.
What I love the most exposing students to "science beyond the textbook" and opening their eyes to all the incredible ways science is in our world.
With over 70% of my students coming from Free & Reduced lunch programs and state assistance programs, my classroom is their biggest opportunity to be exposed to science beyond the traditional model.
My students are traditional a mix of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. My classes are typically 60% female to 40% male ratio. Our district has a "school choice" and 20% of my students "chose" Gettys over their city's assigned school. Our program follows the PLTW program. Gettys has been awarded PLTW Distinguished School award 2 years running. In 2019, I was named an Outstanding PLTW Gateway Educator and I am our District’s ToY.
My Project
There are limits to where I can take my students on field trips due to money, time, and missing other classes. Virtual reality interfaces with the help of Google offer learning outside our classroom walls.
Learning and exploring becomes practically endless with access to Google Expeditions.
I am able to "take" my Medical Detective students into a VET office or OR for real-world career exposure. While my Flight & Space students can witness a shuttle launch or explore outer space with an astronaut on the International Space Station.
Have a VR set for my 430+ students will offer endless experiences. AND I am able to share the set with other teachers for use by even more students.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
