The students in my classroom are learners with special needs.
They qualify to receive special services in a preschool setting in order to help prepare them for their future school career.
Many of the students come from a low income background. My students have not had a typical childhood with the challenges they face.
This classroom provides a safe environment for them where they can learn and grow. Preschool is a place to learn many skills before entering into the big, demanding world of elementary school.
For those with special needs, the day is filled with challenges that exceed your typical child's. All of the students face developmental delays. This affects their ability to do day-to-day activities that children their age can independently do.
My Project
My students need resources to meet their young needs. Students attending the Early Childhood Special Education program are starting at a younger age and have more significant needs than ever before.
To meet my students' changing needs, we need new tools and resources that are age appropriate for them to learn.
Students begin at the age of 2 years and 7 months in our Special Education program. Within the last few years, these students are at younger developmental levels than ever before. Therefore, our current tools for learning are much too hard for them. Students need to actively engage in their learning at this age. Benjamin Franklin said it best. "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."
With your help, my students can get the "toys" and learning resources they need to build many skills, at their level. Students will build fine motor skills using the Clip and Create Builders, the Lakeshore Creature Builders, and manipulatives in the Toddler Manipulative Library. Students will learn language skills, academic skills, and problem solving skills through the use of the high interest tools I'm requesting: Fun Fruit Counters and Vehicle Counters, Early Math Activity Center and Magnetic Language Learning Rods.
