Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children learn by doing. I believe they must be actively engaged in their education, not passively receiving knowledge; therefore, I strive to create an environment in my classroom where children self-select engaging centers that cover common core standards.
I want all of my students to think of themselves as life long learners.
I work hard to foster a passion for learning in my students and to create a safe learning environment where they will be able to grow and progress.
The majority of my students are Latino and for many English is their second language. This year I have a number of African American students as well. Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all students. The parents of my students are hard workers and want the best for their children. Many of them work long hours trying to provide for their families. I have a wide range of reading abilities in my class from a non-reader to several who are already reading on grade level for the end of second grade. My goal is to meet each child where they are and to help them grow and develop as a student.
My Project
The materials I have requested will enable me to create amazing and motivating hands-on centers that not only cover the common core standards but bring them to life. With the Continents of the World Activity Chest, Kids Around the World, and some of the other social studies materials, I will be creating seven different continent boxes. Each box will contain non fiction and fiction pieces from and about each continent. These materials will include information on the cultures, languages, animals, and art and architecture from each continent. I want the world to come to life for my students and for them to learn about the greater world around them. In addition there are puzzles that address Language Art standards such as irregular plurals and prefixes and suffixes. The Shades of Meaning Word Fans and the Shades of Meaning Learning Center will help extend our semantic gradient vocabulary lessons into centers that students can have fun manipulating.
These exciting and unique materials will help my students master common core standards as well as foster a love for learning.
Many of these materials will support our Language Arts/Social Studies unit, “Where in the World Are We?” These high interest, global materials, will expose my children to the world around them. The other items will be used in centers where they will make a tremendous difference in our classroom by providing access to engaging materials that connect to our curriculum.
