Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low-income city. My students are made up of children from the ages of 3-5 years old. Half of my students are special needs and half are peers. At the moment they learn through videos that I post for them online. These videos include stories that I read with comprehension questions and videos of circle time. Circle time videos include calendar, weather, a daily message, as well as a letter, shape, or number of the week. Circle time videos are concluded with a phonological game. For my students on an IEP, I send their parents weekly assignments that focus on a specific goal.
At the moment I can only teach them through a screen.
March 12th was the last day my students were in class. Since then school has been closed for the remainder of the year. I was given a 5 minute window to go into my classroom to grab as much as I could. I was able to get a small whiteboard, a marker, my calendar book and my weather chart. I’m trying to work with what I have at home, but it isn’t the same as having quality materials to teach with.
My Project
These materials would be so helpful to my students during distance learning because they will help them stay engaged! I teach preschoolers between the ages of 3-5 years old. Sitting in front of a screen while I record circle times or teach them new math and ELA concepts can be difficult for children this age. With exciting and fun materials, my students will be more engaged while watching my videos. These materials will also help me differentiate my lessons so students of different ages and capabilities can learn and enjoy themselves while doing it.
