My Students
My scholars are a diverse group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources and experiences usually available students their age living in the United States.
As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning where they will nurture their basic reading/math skills, encourage critical thinking, collaboration with others and empower them with the skills necessary to be successful 21st-century learners.
These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.
My Project
The materials from this project will be used to teach my students how to play the games of basketball and football. Many of my students have never had the opportunity to learn the rules or how to play these games. This project will focus on teaching the boys and girls in my 5th grade classroom how to dribble and shoot, as well as the different positions of each player on the court.
Utilizing the three students that know how to play basketball as “Student Assistant-Coaches” (SAC), we will plan 4 consecutive PE periods by focusing on different aspects of the game.
The SACs will demonstrate and assist with teaching their peers how to dribble, shoot, and pass. With the basketballs from this project, we will be able to break our class into groups of three, with each group sharing 3-4 balls and practicing the different skills. At the end of the 4 sessions, we will be able to utilize the mesh pennies to have a class basketball game!
Following the 4 Basketball sessions, I will follow the same pattern when teaching my students to play Football; select SACs, meet with them and plan 4 P.E. sessions where we will be teaching students how to pass, catch, and the rules of how to play. With the footballs from this project, we will be able to work on a few different skills at a time in small groups.
For example, one group will be working on passing, another on punting and the last group on conditioning. Again, after we have all learned the rules and practiced football skills, we will have a class football game using the Mesh Pennies. Students will have access to basketballs and pennies to play during recess.
