My students need to experience, apply, and extend their science learning and social/emotional skills by going on an overnight, technology free, field trip at Cody Outdoor Classroom on Lake Ossipee, NH.
Students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. These students are no different. But no matter what group of students I have, they're all special. They are special as a whole group and each one is just as special as an individual. They are eager to learn and walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them. As a grade level, we try to expose our students to real-life situations, whether that be from inside the classroom, or by taking the classroom somewhere else.
My Project
Traveling to Camp Cody for an overnight field trip will allow our predominantly economically deprived students an opportunity to experience hands-on learning. Many of our students have never been away from their families. Being in a technology-free environment will be a unique experience for them as well.
Students will encounter problems to solve, mountains to climb, and opportunities for collaboration.
Adolescents will gain confidence in their abilities through active learning with camp counselors. This trip also allows more informal interactions with their teachers, enhancing student/teacher relationships while building assets. The hands-on science lessons that students experience will culminate this year's curriculum while introducing next year's curriculum.
Students will gain a sense of confidence by participating in low-ropes activities, team-building games, and they will even get to go out on the lake for water activities. Students will learn about lake ecology, gathering data and constructing arguments based on the data they find. They will also have an opportunity to explore Newton's Three Laws of Motion with a simple design challenge.
