My Students
My classroom is a diverse inclusive classroom of low-income students aged 3 to 5. For most of my students, this is their first learning experience. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch at school. We are located in the inner city of Pittsburgh and provide a free comprehensive program that is designed to nurture and support each child as we prepare them to transition to kindergarten.
My students are very interested in learning about letters, math social studies, engineering and science, and enjoy exploring with technology.
They are dreamers, thinkers, and questioners and love to discover new things about the world around them. Despite the challenges they face they come to school each day ready to work and play with smiles and positive attitudes.
My Project
My students are 3,4 and 5 years old and they learn through their senses. They are always touching and smelling as they explore the world around them. Exposing them to various sensory items in the classroom is important to meet their needs. The different needs of each student can be better addressed by having sensory items such as washable sensory items with various shapes and textures. We need materials to improve and increase student attention and focus by meeting their sensory needs, which will help to increase their academic achievement.
These items will not only meet sensory needs but will also be incorporated into academic lessons.
For example, when using the Feel & Find Sensory Tubs, students will be able to identify the letters of the alphabet, shapes and numbers while having increased participation and attending by feeling the various items. The Mad Matter Sensory dough and Lakeshore dough tools will allow my students to feel, explore, and create. The light table is a favorite area and incorporating play materials into this area will further encourage and enrich exploration and use of the senses. Using different sensory stimuli, helps some students to stay calm, can ease anxiety and help students to focus on learning. The Movin' Sit Jr. will allow the students who need help to sit calmly through the use of sensory stimuli.
These items are safe and washable for students that may put items into their mouth. The items requested will give them new ways to explore with their senses all around our classroom!
