My Students
I teach students that some would say are below grade level readers, I say they just haven't found the right book yet. While my students may take a little longer to comprehend texts, they are very passionate about school and the world in which they live.
I strive to create meaningful, relevant curriculum that encourages their curiosity and desire to learn.
They are amazing students that I am lucky to teach and learn from.
While every student benefits from engaging instruction, my students require it. They love listening to music, playing video games and watching YouTube videos. They do not love reading, and hate writing. I want each of them to know the joy that comes from getting lost in a book, and the pride that come from the ability to communicate effectively and clearly in writing.
My Project
As a teacher it is critical for me to increase my knowledge, so that I can improve my instructional practice. There is no better way to do this than by attending the NCTE Annual Convention.
This convention allows me to learn from leaders in my field, and bring back this knowledge to my students.
I am also able to meet and learn from teachers and expand my repertoire of strategies to help my students become stronger readers and writers. I attended this convention four years ago, and the experience was invaluable.
Not only did I bring knowledge home with me, it also inspired me to become active in our state NCTE council. I also met many authors, and received copies of books to add to my classroom library. Many of my students were excited, and inspired to read because the author of the book write a personal note to them. My attendance at the National Conference for Teachers of English will provide me with literacy skills and resources which I can bring back to my students.
