"It's Friday! Friday! Friday! Don't wanna work, I want to play!" This is a favorite chant of my fifth graders who visit at least three classrooms each Friday, singing and being praised for their hard work that they have completed that week. The students' enthusiasm for celebrating their hard work permeates throughout the entire building.
One hundred percent of our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch in our rural community, but participating in a variety of activities, definitely keeps these fifth graders engaged and willing to learn.
We also have a local National Guard Unit in our area and have a lot of military families with parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins serving in our beautiful country. Our staff also has the opportunity to focus on the homeless students in our area by attending workshops and lectures to meet the needs of our students. We are dedicated to helping our students and their families in every way we can.
My Project
One of my goals in my classroom is to motivate and engage students into their learning. I work hard to make activities fun and engaging for my students. Ralph Waldo Emerson quoted "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm". I love this quote and remind my students that learning can be fun.
This glow project would enhance all my teaching into fun days of learning in the dark with glow materials.
Each student would wear headlamps to complete a variety of writing and math activities. Wearing glow in the dark party hats and glasses will just add to the fun of learning in the classroom. We would spend the day completing everyday reading, language, math and science activities using the glow in the dark materials. The board games would reinforce concepts already taught for a fun day of learning in the dark. The kids will think they are just at a huge glow party but in reality, they will be learning as they glow.
