Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Once my students walk in the classroom they are greeted with a smile and "good morning" from everyone in the classroom, adults and peers. From the time they enter the classroom to the time they exit to go home my students follow a routine designed to keep them engaged and learning.
My school is a title I school that serves students that come from low-income families and the majority qualify for free and reduced lunch program.
My class is the sole special education program at our school dedicated to students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities on the alternate curriculum. My students are eager learners that are in need of accessing contents in a variety of approaches and tools. They are always excited when introduced to new materials. My students are extremely active and their attention span lasts no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. They need constant stimulation. Most of my students are developing their physical and motor skills which are supported by occupational therapy and adaptive physical education. I have low-verbal and non-verbal students in the classroom that receive speech and language services. My students have many needs from basic daily life-skills (e.g. diapering) to exposure to age appropriate standards based curriculum.
My Project
My students curriculum is called Unique Learning System (ULS) and it is completely on-line. In order to keep students engaged I have designed lessons that consist of 20% whole group instruction and 80% small group instruction. My students' need an ipad mini and durable protective case to access art applications that will support delivery of instruction, communication and demonstration of their knowledge. Technology is an effective tool to spark student interest and the art applications that the ipad mini possesses will further inspire my students' learning. My students have sensory needs that can only be achieved through a variety of art activities. The ipad mini will allow students to work with a tool in small groups expressing themselves through music, educational videos, dancing, and painting. Art will be used in all core curriculum areas and for developing self-help needs like motor skills, communication and behavior. The ipad mini art apps will also be used to assess learning.
Donations to this project will inspire my students to learn using their artistic expression.
My students need a variety of approaches to demonstrate their talents and knowledge. My students lives will be changed because they will be able to show progress and mastery through a tool that best supports them. They will gain confidence and interest in their work and learning.
