Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Once my students walk in the classroom they are greeted with a smile and "good morning" from everyone in the classroom, adults and peers. From the time they enter the classroom to the time they exit to go home my students follow a routine designed to keep them engaged and learning.

My school is a title I school that serves students that come from low-income families and the majority qualify for free and reduced lunch program.

My class is the sole special education program at our school dedicated to students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities on the alternate curriculum. My students are eager learners that are in need of accessing contents in a variety of approaches and tools. My students are extremely active and their attention span lasts no longer than ten to fifteen minutes per activity. They need constant stimulation. Most of my students are developing their physical and motor skills that are supported by occupational therapy and adaptive physical education. My students need constant encouragement and positive reinforcement to develop their confidence in content areas they struggle with the most. Using technology to support their artistic expression through different media will help them gain confidence in their work.

My Project

My students curriculum is called Unique Learning System (ULS) and it is completely on-line. In order to keep students engaged I have designed lessons that consist of 20% whole group instruction and 80% small group instruction. In order to meet students needs and keep them engaged the iPad mini and protective case will be used to support delivery of instruction in small groups through artistic applications. The ipad mini applications will allow students to learn and express themselves using drawing and painting applications. The art applications will give students who have sensory processing needs an opportunity to participate in core content areas while reinforcing motor skills development. The iPad will also be used to teach rhymes and repetitive songs through music applications to support learning. The iPad mini with protective case will be used to teach students rhythm and following directions through dance. Dance will also assist students' develop coordination and motor control.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom tremendously by allowing my students to access their curriculum in small group instruction more efficiently.

The iPad mini with its case protector will also allow students and adults to easily and safely transport it around the classroom. The iPad mini will change my students' lives by providing opportunities for them to show off their talents and knowledge through art expression.
