Learning Anatomy Through Dissection

My students need 33 frogs to dissect with some new dissecting supplies to explore the systems of the body.

My Students

Science is everywhere! That is what I tell my kids everyday. They slowly are beginning to see it but they need to be able to experience it. For them to truly understand that science is not only in a textbook by it surrounds us everyday, they need to feel it.

My seventh graders are a very diverse bunch.

We many Latino, African-American, Asian, and Pacific Islander students who are very proud of who they are. They all live in some of the poorest parts of the districts though and over 70 percent of the school is on free or reduced lunch. Many of the students are not invested in their education because they don't understand its importance, or have young parents that themselves dropped out of school at an early age. They need to be able to receive the same learning experiences that are given at the best schools in the district.

My Project

The resources I am requesting are for a discovery learning experiment. We will be exploring the human body, one of the most important aspects of 7th grade life science for their health. After examining and learning about the systems of the body, we will be able to dissect frogs to get a closer look at the bones, muscles, and circulatory system it has. This will be a great experience for each and every one of them so that they will get to see the concepts in their textbooks in a real world context. They will be challenged to use their scientific methods skills and follow strict procedures, also giving them practice of the life of a surgeon. Each and every students will finally feel like the scientists I have been calling them all year long and enforce their love for science.

Our school is located in one of the best districts in the state of California.

Unfortunately the school itself is always rounding out the bottom of the list. With so many underprivileged students that get treated and lower ranks, They need to be able to have the same resources their more privileged peers are receiving. The state of our economy is severely impacting education, and a school like our is impacted even harder. With these resources they can receive a proper education.
