My Students
To engage students in Social Studies has always been an uphill battle, but I am planning on this year being the year that I make Social Studies my kids' favorite subject.
I teach in a school where 97% of students receive free lunch.
These kids have not seen a lot outside their communities, some have never even been out of their neighborhoods. Despite their position, or maybe because of it, these kids are eager to learn. They're open to learn about the past, the world around them, and predict the future. That's why I hope to introduce them to Social Studies, give them a chance to see the world.
My Project
Social Studies is usually the subject that kids huff and puff about when they realize it is time to start the lesson. I want to change that. I am asking for a complete social studies instant library, a set of biographies, a set of biography comprehension cards, a set of game buzzers to make Social Studies more interesting. The resources I'm requesting are to bring Social Studies to life in the classroom. By using Social Studies kits and games, I'll be able to allow my kids to work in centers and actually be engaged. My students will be able to contribute to each Other's learning by working together. The novels I am requesting will allow students to read about other cultures as well as people of the past. The kids will be able to read about those who have made a difference and dream of doing the same.
Donations to my classroom will help my students in so many ways.
The first way is obvious, it will help my students learn. The second way donations will help is because the resources I will be able to get will engage my students. And engaging students in the lesson is half the battle as a teacher, especially in Social Studies. Thirdly, your donations will show the kids what good is out there in the world. Donating will hopefully show the importance of helping and inspire them to do the same.
