My Students
My students come from low-income households where English is their second language. They are of different cultures and ethnicities. These are kindergarteners in a general education class that includes students of English Language Learners and students with special needs. They were in pre-school last year for only six months until COVID hit.
They have missed out on a lot of learning/creativity while attending class remotely.
They had a tough time learning remotely at such a young age. It has been a very tough year for everyone.
My Project
During a typical school year, my kindergarteners who are mostly English language learners and students with disabilities had fun learning their names, sight words, alphabet, shapes, and counting through art projects without even realizing it was academics (shhhh!) Having the hands-on activities helped them tremendously. I miss the little smiles when I said, "It's art time!" They were so happy to show off their finished products and talk about the steps they took (practicing sequencing). Students learned to use positive words to critique their classmates’ art work. They are coming back to school after over a year being remote, not knowing how to socialize in a classroom.
My students haven't had art in a 1 1/2 year since COVID-19, therefore missing out on huge opportunities to be creative and expressing themselves through art and that's why I want to bring art back!
As a result of these art activities, students also practice their fine motor skills by handling school tools including holding a scissors, cutting properly, using a glue stick etc.
