Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 24 students attend a Title 1 school and are all learning English as a second language. Although, their community is characterized as underserved, my students come to school with positive energy, excited to learn to speak and read in English! .
It is astonishing to see how thirsty they are to read new books with great stories.
Their English language skills are still in the early developmental stages, and it is vital that I do at least one to two read alouds each day to expose them to language and vocabulary they are not receiving at home. Reading big books while on the rug is something they enjoy doing every day and a very important aspect of learning how to read in first grade!
My Project
This project will serve to teach students to appreciate the diversity that makes up our world. The characters in these books all come from different backgrounds and tell incredible stories from their cultures. Some of these books will be read aloud to students and some will be put in their book baggies to be read independently.
Empowering students through the powerful characters in our books can teach students that anything is possible and that no dream is unachievable.
These various stories will give students valuable lessons in stereotyping, as well as help recognize that the words you say can hurt. Most importantly, students will come to appreciate every one's differences after seeing so many different characters come to life in these books.
