Hooray! This project is fully funded

I am an elementary science lab teacher in Houston, Texas. My school has over 250 Katrina students who continue to need extra help in all subject areas to be successful. The fifth-grade teachers and I would like to provide ALL of our students with as many learning experiences as possible before they move on to middle school. A unit on solar energy will provide much-needed math and science experiences, and will also stimulate interest in energy conservation and alternative fuels. Students will learn how to turn sunlight into mechanical and electrical energy for many of the everyday items in their lives. Activities using solar panels to power cars, heat water, cook food, and light their homes will help them understand key concepts such as renewable- and alternative-energy sources. For example, with the Power House Energy Kit students can build a model house complete with solar panels, windmill, greenhouse, and desalination system. The kit focuses on the heat and light energy from the sun and the energy from the wind, as well as electrochemical and plant energy This unit will last for four weeks and impact about 150 fifth-grade students, not only this year but for many years to come. Thank you for your support.
