Learning About Ourselves by Studying Inclusive Literature

Help me give my students literature that supports and teaches students about social behavior, such as the importance of understanding those who are different from ourselves, through books such as Educated, The Hate U Give, and others.

My Students

My classroom is filled with students from all walks of life. They walk through the door with different abilities, are of different races, belong to different cultures, are from a different landscape and practice different religions. Often when they walk into a classroom, they do not see themselves reflected in the books that they are given to read.

As with most teenagers, they are building their identity, discovering who they are and what they believe in.

They are eager to learn about how others perceive them and the world in which they live. They learn from one another through rich conversations and experiences.

This year our focus will be on identity. By understanding other peoples experiences, we are better able to understand ourselves. The books I have chosen for this Book Club will help us begin the conversation.

My Project

When students read literature, they can imagine what it is like to be that person. This awareness carries over into the real world and lets us explore someone else's truth. This project supports and teaches students about values and social behaviors such as the importance of understanding those who are different from ourselves.

Learning about navigating new and different ways of being in the world helps nurture compassion, understanding and empathy.

When we read these diverse titles such as Educated, The Glass Castle and All American Boys for example, we step into someone else's life and learn to see the world differently.
